Summer has arrived – the sun is shining – and we’re all desperate to go on holiday to take in the rays of the searing sunshine. While many of us jump straight into fishing around for cheap flights to sunny islands and beach resorts abroad, several of us actually overlook the veracious beauty and exhilaration that many UK cities, towns and villages can boast in the summertime. So, as summer is here, we’ve outlined ten must-visit UK hot spots that will make you rethink boarding a plane and book train tickets with national rail this summer (drum roll please)!
- Lake District
Beaches are fun in summer, but we’re sure the Lake District has more to offer – something a lot more unique. This national park is also a region in Cumbria that is well renowned for its rough and rugged fell mountains, frigid ribbon lakes, and affable market towns. There are 16 wonderful lakes for you to swim, row, kayak or explore on a cruise or pedalo.
- Scottish Highlands
Offering scenic views and breathing sights, this remote mountainous region in Scotland is a real treasure of the UK. It houses the fearsome Ben Nevis, the iconic Loch Ness (home of the monster), picturesque beaches and the Cairngorms.
- Cotswolds
Nothing screams picturesque more than the blissful nature preserve of Cotswolds which boasts honey-hued stone buildings that make up its stunning architecture. Mediaeval villages and rolling hills paint a wonderful landscape in this area.
- Devon
Golden sand beaches compliment jagged coastlines along this magnificent area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB.) You can venture here via railway and explore beautiful rivers and the seafront.
- London
We need not explain this one (honestly). London is the perfect city break; there’s no better place to explore heaps of history, a fusion of both modern and traditional architecture, legendary landmarks, splendid food, exquisite drinking spots and ornate entertainment than the UK’s capital
- Cornwall
Cornwall, which is situated on the southwest coast of the UK, is nearly completely encircled by water and is one of the country’s most popular holiday destinations for clear reasons.
- Chester
Chester, one of the UK’s most stunning and well-preserved mediaeval cities, was established by the Romans around 2,000 years ago and has a rich and intriguing history. It’s also decorated with many modern restaurants, attractions and is home to the marvellous Chester Zoo – a great attraction for families.
- Northumberland
Northumberland boasts wild beaches, unspoiled agricultural landscapes, historical castles and residences, picturesque towns and market villages, and is located in the very upper north of England, between the Scottish Borders and Hadrian’s Wall.
- Dorset
One of the nicest spots on the south coast for a quick getaway is Dorset, which is home to amazing ancient geological formations, charming pebble beaches covered with fossils, and spectacular views.
- Pembrokeshire, Wales
The only coastal national park in the United Kingdom is located in Pembrokeshire, a county in the far west of Wales, and the astounding beach terrain is a major draw for tourists.
